We’re looking at the possibility of getting MARC records from Serials Solutions (for a price).

In addition to providing full records for journal titles in the coverage load, they will create some extra fields for us so we can load into the journal title index and ERM at the same time.

There are a great many unanswered questions with this approach, and we’re starting to articulate and identify some of the issues. For example, how would these records relate to our existing records, both bibs and potential e-resource records? How will checkins be created? What happens when duplicate records exist? How are holdings reconciled? Will links be local links, or will they point to Serials Solutions? What is the relation to Webbridge? How is the maintenance handled? etc.

We’ve loaded two test samples of 50 records each, so that we can model some different approaches; and we’re contacting other libraries that have similar setups, so that we can compare notes.

Still in the very preliminary information gathering stage of this part of the exercise.
