Genre/form is starting to loom larger. The topic comes up regularly in ERM meetings. I’ve been working on this issue for a while, especially since discovering some congruencies in Dublin Core with resource types.

Hence the possibility of adding a new index for genre terms has potential both within the WebPAC for regular subjects, and for e-resource records within ERM; and gaining experience with handling genre terms will then help as we move into institutional repository metadata.

LC has started distributing genre authority records, and in Release 2007, I notice that the WebPAC module will start to handle the authority record subfield coding.

I have been pouring over the authority record structure for the last few days and am beginning to see where some of the problems lie — some seem to be limited to display issues, not retrieval or indexing — which is a Good Thing.

Assuming we do go in the direction of adding genre/form terms in the WebPAC and ERM, the supporting structure of the authority indexes and its relation to other elements needs to be well understood.
