There is a series of articles published by Luanne Freund (FIS UofT), Elaine Toms (Dalhousie Faculty of Management) and Charles Clarke (School of Comp Sci, Waterloo) examining the role that genre plays in information seeking.

The authors’ research leads them to explore and establish a clear correlation between the information task and the document genre.

The results of our research are a significant contribution to information retrieval research with respect to the illusive goal of contextual search and the more immediate need for improved enterprise search systems.

See Towards genre classification for IR in the workplace, by Freund, Toms and Clarke.
