These days there is a goodly amount of discussion about name identifiers among members of the scientific scholarly community.  ORCID (Open Researcher & Contributor ID) is definitely an initiative that is starting to pick up some serious steam.  It is building upon research ID systems that are already in place, but is extending the model.

Once we start thinking about what kinds of alternative metrics could be applied to emerging types of scholarly communication, author identification (particularly from a disambiguation perspective) is in the mix.  A name registry which can successfully establish a level of trust for accurate author attribution, and could be used to identify other ‘instances’ of that scholar’s work (outside of traditional publishing streams) could be extremely important.
