The US Office of Science and Technology (OSTI) created an awesome all-in-one search widget for science and technological sources.  This compact widget deftly incorporates:

  • Search (combines DOE, international repositories, more…)
  • Tools (Harvestable OAI records of DOE docs; E-prints alerts, flyers, widgets, more…)
  • Top Docs downloaded (updated monthly)
  • Top Subjects downloaded (thousands of full-text docs retrieved at Information Bridge can be filtered by your favorite field, including Research Org, Sponsoring, Org, more…)

Check out the widget here:  Librarian Research Connection.

How is such seamless federated search technology accomplished?  Is it <pun> classified </pun]?

I’m not at all familiar with tools used to access government information, but considering that tools like this exist, then more work needs to be done to SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS.
